Woodfired Garlic Panko Breaded Chicken Nuggets

The frozen bag is a lie. Chicken nuggets should taste like chicken, juicy inside, crust that actually shatters, flavor built into every layer. That’s what you get when you bread fresh chicken breasts with Kinder’s Crispy Panko Blend Woodfired Garlic Coating and run them through the air fryer.

The family-dinner compromise that isn’t one, from our weeknight dinner recipes.

The Kinder’s Crispy Panko Blend Woodfired Garlic Coating brings the crunch and the flavor in one bag. It’s a seasoned panko blend with woodfired garlic built in, it locks onto the chicken and crisps to a golden, shatteringly crunchy crust without a drop of frying oil. The rest of the ingredient list stays minimal: chicken breasts, flour, eggs, cooking spray. The coating handles the flavor. Your job is the technique.

Standard three-station breading: flour, egg, panko. Cut the chicken into uniform 1 to 1½-inch pieces, uniform sizing means everything finishes at the same time. Dredge in flour, dip in egg, press into the Kinder’s blend, spray both sides lightly. Into the air fryer at 390–400°F for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway. Pull at 165°F internal temp and let them rest 5 minutes. The crust keeps setting as they cool. They’ll be crispier at the 5-minute mark than straight out of the basket.

Don’t crowd the basket. Single layer, space between each piece. Air fryers circulate hot air, pack them in and you’re steaming, not frying. Work in batches if you need to.

This is a 25-minute recipe. It works on weeknight plates next to waffle fries, on a game day spread with five dipping sauces, or stacked on a brioche bun as a sandwich. Whatever the occasion, these replace the frozen bag permanently.

Flavor First.

Ingredients

  • 2 large chicken breasts, cut into 1 to 1 1/2-inch nugget pieces
  • 1 cup Kinder’s Crispy Panko Blend Woodfired Garlic Coating No Kinder’s? Use instead: 1 cup plain panko breadcrumbs, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp smoked paprika, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp sea salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper — combined to replicate the blend
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauces of choice, for serving

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • 3 shallow dishes or bowls
  • Cutting board and chef’s knife
  • Tongs or fork
  • Cooking spray
  • Meat thermometer

Method

  1. Preheat air fryer to 390-400 degrees F for 3-5 minutes. While it heats, cut chicken breasts into nugget-sized pieces — aim for uniform 1 to 1 1/2-inch pieces for even cooking.
  2. Set up a three-station breading line: Pour flour into the first shallow dish, beaten eggs into the second, and Kinder’s Crispy Panko Blend Woodfired Garlic Coating into the third.
  3. Working one nugget at a time, dip each chicken piece in flour and shake off the excess. Next, dip into the beaten egg, letting any excess drip off. Finally, press into the Kinder’s Crispy Panko Blend, coating all sides completely. Repeat for remaining nuggets.
  4. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange coated nuggets in a single layer in the basket, leaving a little space between each piece for air circulation. Do not stack or crowd.
  5. Lightly spray the tops of the nuggets with cooking spray to help them brown and crisp evenly.
  6. Air fry at 390-400 degrees F for 12-15 minutes, or until nuggets are golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F. Shake the basket or flip nuggets halfway through for even browning.
  7. Let nuggets rest for 5-10 minutes before serving — the crust continues to crisp as they cool slightly. Serve with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Rest before serving — Let the nuggets sit 5 minutes after pulling them from the basket. The crust keeps setting as they cool. Straight out they’re good. Five minutes later they’re better.
  • Cut uniform pieces — Aim for 1 to 1½-inch pieces. Irregular cuts mean smaller pieces overcook while larger ones stay underdone. Consistent sizing is the whole game here.
  • Two-hand breading — Keep one hand dry (flour and panko) and one hand wet (egg). Mix the two and the coating clumps, sticks to your fingers, and falls off in the fryer.
  • Don’t crowd the basket — Single layer with space between each piece. Overcrowding blocks airflow and you get steam, not crunch. Work in batches if you have to.
  • Double coat for max crust — After the first flour-egg-panko pass, run through egg and panko a second time. Thicker crust, more crunch, more surface area holding the woodfired garlic flavor.
  • Reheat in the air fryer — Leftover nuggets go back in at 375°F for 4–5 minutes. The microwave turns the breading soft. Don’t do it.
Serving Suggestions
  • Dipping sauces first: honey mustard, ranch, Sriracha aioli, or BBQ. Put out two or three options and let people choose. That’s the move for game day spreads.
  • For a full plate, serve alongside waffle fries and coleslaw. The crispy-creamy contrast holds up next to the panko crust. Or build a sandwich: toasted brioche bun, shredded lettuce, pickles, aioli. That’s a weeknight plate worth repeating.
  • For entertaining, pile them on a platter with sauce cups at the edges. They hold well after resting — the crust doesn’t go soft the way deep-fried nuggets do. People can graze without timing it perfectly.
Storage & Reheating
  • Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 375°F for 4–5 minutes to restore the crust. The microwave makes the breading soggy — skip it.
  • Freezer: Freeze cooked nuggets in a single layer on a sheet pan, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Reheat from frozen in the air fryer at 400°F for 8–10 minutes. No thawing needed.
  • Meal prep: Bread raw nuggets ahead, freeze them in a single layer, and cook from frozen. Add 3–5 minutes to the cook time. The crust holds up the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature do you air fry chicken nuggets?

390–400°F for 12–15 minutes. Pull when the internal temp hits 165°F and flip or shake the basket halfway through for even browning.

Can you make these without Kinder’s Woodfired Garlic Coating?

Yes. Combine 1 cup plain panko with 1 tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp smoked paprika, ½ tsp onion powder, ½ tsp sea salt, and ¼ tsp black pepper. Solid substitute, it won’t have the same depth as the Kinder’s blend.

Why are my air fryer chicken nuggets not crispy?

Two culprits: crowded basket or no cooking spray. Overcrowding blocks airflow. Skipping the spray means the panko doesn’t brown evenly. Space the nuggets out, spray the tops, and rest them 5 minutes after cooking.

Can you freeze homemade chicken nuggets?

Yes, two ways. Freeze cooked nuggets and reheat from frozen at 400°F for 8–10 minutes. Or freeze raw after breading and cook straight from frozen, adding 3–5 minutes to the cook time.

What dipping sauces go with woodfired garlic chicken nuggets?

Honey mustard and ranch are the natural fits. Sriracha aioli adds heat. Classic BBQ holds up against the woodfired garlic. Put out a couple options.

How do you keep homemade chicken nuggets crispy?

Rest them 5 minutes after cooking, the crust sets as they cool. For leftovers, the air fryer reheats better than anything else. A toaster oven works in a pinch. The microwave doesn’t.
