Kinder’s honey Hot Smashed Sliders

Smash them hard and fast, that’s where the crispy, lacy edges come from. Honey hot smashed sliders use Kinder’s Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning and Kinder’s Honey Hot BBQ Sauce to turn 80/20 ground beef into something worth showing up for.

Built for the couch crowd: the rest of our game day recipes run the same one-hand rule.

The technique is a smash burger. You press each beef ball flat against a screaming hot flattop or cast iron skillet, and in two to three minutes you’ve got a seared crust with those crispy, lacy edges where the fat renders out to a near-crackle. No filler. That’s the texture doing the work.

The Kinder’s Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning runs in two directions. Into the onions while they caramelize low and slow, 12 to 15 minutes until golden and soft. Then straight onto the smashed patties right after the press, seasoning the crust as it forms. That double hit builds flavor in every layer.

Once the patties flip and the cheese melts, dome and steam if you want it instant, you build the slider. Bottom bun, Kinder’s Honey Hot BBQ Sauce, patty, spoonful of caramelized onions, another drizzle of Honey Hot, top bun. That’s the build.

This makes 12 sliders, serves 6, and runs 35 minutes start to finish. Prep is 15 minutes. It holds for game day, a backyard cookout, or any Tuesday you want dinner with a real crust on it.

Flavor First.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb ground beef, 80/20 blend for maximum juiciness and crispy edges
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3-4 tbsp olive oil, divided
  • 3-4 tbsp Kinder's Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning, divided No Kinder’s? Use instead: onion powder + garlic butter seasoning blend — combined to replicate the blend
  • 12 slice American or cheddar cheese cut to fit mini patties
  • 12 slider buns, lightly toasted
  • 3/4 cup Kinder's Honey Hot BBQ Sauce plus extra for serving; No Kinder’s? Use instead: honey BBQ sauce + a pinch of cayenne — combined to replicate the blend

Equipment

  • Large skillet or flattop griddle
  • Heavy spatula or burger press
  • Wax paper squares
  • Dome lid
  • Tongs, mixing bowls

Method

  1. Caramelize onions: Heat 2 Tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and about 1 tsp of Kinder’s Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, 12–15 minutes until deeply golden and soft. Remove and set aside.
  2. Prep patties: Divide ground beef into 12 equal portions (about 2–2.5 oz each). Roll each into a loose ball — do not season yet.
  3. Preheat flattop: Heat flattop or skillet to medium-high (about 375–400°F). Lightly oil the surface.
  4. Smash burgers: Place burger balls on the hot surface (work in batches). Cover each with a square of wax paper, then smash firmly with a heavy spatula or burger press to about ¼-inch thick. Peel off the wax paper immediately.
  5. Season & cook: Immediately sprinkle tops generously with Kinder’s Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning. Cook 2–3 minutes until edges are crispy and browned.
  6. Flip & cheese: Flip patties, then top each with a slice of cheese. Cook 1–2 minutes more until cheese melts and bottom is crisp. For a faster melt, cover with a dome lid and add a small splash of water — steam does the work instantly.
  7. Toast buns: While patties finish, toast slider buns cut-side down on the flattop for about 1 minute until golden.
  8. Build sliders: Spread Kinder’s Honey Hot BBQ Sauce on the bottom bun. Add a cheesy smashed patty, a spoonful of caramelized onions, another drizzle of Honey Hot BBQ Sauce, then the top bun.
  9. Serve immediately — stack 2–3 per plate for sharing, or go all in on a full stack.

Notes

  • Smash hard and fast — Place the wax paper over the ball, press down with everything you’ve got, and peel immediately. The harder the press, the more surface contact, the crispier the edge. Hesitate and you lose the moment.
  • Double the seasoning on the onions — Add an extra pinch of Kinder’s Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning to the caramelized onions in the last two minutes of cooking. It concentrates as the moisture cooks off.
  • Sauce to your heat level — Kinder’s Honey Hot BBQ Sauce brings sweet heat. One drizzle is a warm finish. Two drizzles is the full punch. Neither is wrong.
  • Steam the cheese — Dome lid, small splash of water, 10 seconds. The steam does more for cheese melt in one burst than a minute of waiting without it.
  • Make the onions ahead — Caramelize up to a day in advance and refrigerate. Reheat gently in a skillet before building. It’s the prep that saves the most time when you’re feeding a crowd.
Serving Suggestions
  • Set up a slider bar. Extra Kinder’s Honey Hot BBQ Sauce in a bowl, sliced jalapeños, pickles, and lettuce on the side — let people stack their own. That format works for game day and for any group where people have opinions about heat.
  • Thin-cut fries or onion rings alongside. The salty crunch cuts through the richness of the beef and the sweetness of the sauce without competing.
  • For larger crowds, double the batch and use a warming tray to hold assembled sliders. They’ll stay hot and the cheese stays melty. Don’t push it past 20 minutes or the buns start to soften.
Storage & Reheating
  • Patties and caramelized onions store separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Keep the sauce and buns out of storage — reheat and assemble fresh each time.
  • To reheat patties: cast iron skillet over medium-high for 1 to 2 minutes per side, or air fryer at 375°F for 4 to 5 minutes. Both restore the crust better than a microwave.
  • Toast the buns fresh. Assemble just before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a regular skillet instead of a flattop?

Cast iron is the move. Get it screaming hot before the first smash and work in batches, you have less surface area than a flattop, so don’t crowd it.

What beef fat ratio works best for smash burgers?

80/20 ground beef. The fat renders into those crispy lacy edges as it smashes flat. Leaner beef won’t develop the same crust, the fat is doing structural work here.

Can I substitute ground turkey or chicken?

You can, but leaner meat won’t develop the same edge. If you use turkey, work a tablespoon of olive oil into the mix and drop the heat slightly to prevent it from drying out before you get color.

How do I keep honey hot smashed sliders warm for a party?

Assemble, wrap in foil, and hold in a 200°F oven for up to 20 minutes. The steam keeps the cheese melty and the sliders warm. Past 20 minutes the buns start to soften.

What does Kinder’s Honey Hot BBQ Sauce taste like?

Sweet BBQ base with a delayed heat that builds. It’s not a straight hot sauce, the honey rounds it out. That balance is what makes it work as both a build sauce and a dipping sauce on the same slider.

Can I make honey hot smashed sliders ahead of time?

Caramelize the onions up to a day ahead and refrigerate. Smash and cook the patties to order, the crust only stays crispy fresh off the heat.
