Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2-3 tbsp Tbsp olive oil for caramelizing onions
  • 2-3 tbsp Kinder's Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning, divided No Kinder’s? Use instead: 1 tsp onion powder, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp sugar, ¼ tsp butter powder (or 1 tsp melted butter stirred in), ¼ tsp sea salt — combined to replicate the blend
  • 2 lb ground beef 80/20 for juiciness
  • 1-2 tbsp roasted minced garlic jarred or fresh roasted
  • 1/3 cup Kinder's Creamy Roasted Garlic Sauce mixed into beef; No Kinder’s? Use instead: 3 Tbsp mayonnaise, 1 Tbsp roasted garlic paste (or 1 tsp garlic powder), 1 tsp lemon juice, ¼ tsp salt — combined to replicate the blend
  • 8-10 slices white American cheese
  • 8-10 slider rolls, lightly toasted soft Hawaiian or brioche style
  • 1/3 cup Kinder's Mild BBQ Sauce for serving; No Kinder’s? Use instead: 1 cup ketchup, 2 Tbsp brown sugar, 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp smoked paprika, ½ tsp garlic powder — combined to replicate the blend
  • Optional: pickles, lettuce, or extra sauce for topping

Equipment

  • Large skillet or flattop griddle
  • Instant-read meat thermometer
  • Dome lid or foil
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Caramelize the onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet or on a flattop over medium-high. Add sliced onions and 1–2 Tbsp Kinder's Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning. Cook 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and caramelized. Add a splash of water if they stick. Push to a cooler side or remove to a bowl and keep warm.
  2. Mix the patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, roasted minced garlic, Kinder's Creamy Roasted Garlic Sauce, and 1 Tbsp Kinder's Caramelized Onion Butter Seasoning until just incorporated — don't overmix or the patties get tough. Form into 8–10 small patties (about 2–3 oz each), pressing slightly thinner in the center for even cooking.
  3. Cook the patties: On the hot flattop or skillet over medium-high, add patties in a single layer. Cook 3–4 minutes per side until browned with crispy edges and internal temp hits 160°F. When you flip, top each with a slice of American cheese and let melt 1–2 minutes (cover with a dome lid for a faster melt).
  4. Toast the buns: While patties finish, toast slider rolls cut-side down on the cooking surface 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
  5. Assemble and serve: Squeeze Kinder's Mild BBQ Sauce on the bottom bun. Add the cheesy patty and a generous scoop of caramelized onions. Top bun goes on. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Onion patience — 30 minutes is the real answer. What most recipes call "caramelized" at 10 minutes is just sweated and lightly browned. True caramelization — deep mahogany color, jammy texture, full sweetness — takes 30–45 minutes over medium-low with the occasional splash of water to deglaze. If you only have 15, you'll still get good onions; if you've got the time, do the full version once and you'll taste what the shortcut costs.
  • Smash technique, loosely applied. These aren't paper-thin smashburgers — they're butter-burger-style sliders with a bit of thickness — but the same principle holds: press each patty firmly into the hot surface once, in the first 30 seconds, then leave it alone. That single initial press maximizes contact for Maillard browning. After that, do not press again; every press after the first pushes juice out the top of the patty.
  • Maillard temp: hot and dry. Get the flattop or cast iron ripping — 400–450°F surface temp is the sweet spot for a real crust. Water (from a wet patty, a wet onion pile crowding the beef, or a cold surface) is the enemy of browning. Cook the onions off to one side or in a separate pan, keep the patty zone dry, and don't overcrowd.
  • Butter finish on the onions. Stir a cold pat of butter into the finished onions off-heat just before assembly. It emulsifies into the fond and gives them gloss, richness, and a cleaner bite — which is the whole point of a butter-burger slider.
  • Toast the bun, hard. Soft Hawaiian or brioche rolls toasted cut-side down on the same cooking surface for 60–90 seconds. You want a golden crust, almost crunchy, on the cut side — a soggy bun turns a good slider into a bad one the second you add sauce and onions.
  • Scale for a crowd. Double everything for parties — a 36-inch flattop handles batches of 12–16 patties. Keep cooked patties warm on a sheet pan in a 200°F oven while you finish the rest. Don't stack them hot; steam kills the crust you just built.
Serving Suggestions
  • Set up a self-serve slider bar with extra Kinder's sauces, pickles, sliced jalapeños, and shredded iceberg — guests like to build their own, and the onion-and-BBQ base plays well with almost any top. For sides, waffle fries or tots are the obvious play; a crisp iceberg wedge with blue cheese and a tangy dressing cuts the richness better than a second starch. On the drink side, these sliders pair with anything cold and a little bitter — a West Coast IPA, a Paloma, or a dark root beer if you're keeping it NA. Best for: game day, tailgates, Super Bowl spreads, casual entertaining, or a weeknight dinner when you want handheld protein and don't want to plate anything.
Storage & Reheating
  • Cooked slider patties keep refrigerated for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Caramelized onions last up to 5 days — store them separately in a sealed jar or container, which also makes them easier to use on eggs, grilled cheese, or pizza later in the week. To reheat patties: hot dry skillet, 2–3 minutes per side, just until warmed through — microwaving rubberizes them and kills the crust. Assemble each slider fresh at serve time. Slider rolls, once dressed with sauce and onion, go soggy fast and don't come back.
